Both 5 and 6 weight rods are considered mid-weight, general purpose rods. If you plan to fish primarily for trout and panfish, a #5 rod is slightly lighter and will work fine. A lighter rod will produce less casting fatigue after a full day of fishing. If you plan to go after Bass (Smallmouth or Largemouth), you'll likely be throwing heavier flies and will want the increased line weight.
Remember that you cast (throw) the LINE, not the FLY (lure), so you'll need a heavier weight rod with heavier line to throw larger flies used to fish for larger species.
Either size is fine to start; if you catch the bug, you'll likely wind up with a number of special purpose rods.
